Bathroom Renovations- where should I start ?
Bathroom renovations involves making many important decisons, but it is how and when you make these decisions which will determine how successful bathroom designs will be.
Most people have a tendency to start by taking a few of their bathroom ideas and working on them one at a time. Architects and specialist bathroom designers take an entirely different approach to bathroom renovations, and this is why they achieve quite different outcomes.
They tend to look at the big picture first, before breaking it down into pieces.Trust me, this the most important step you can take ! Whatever you do, do not go product hunting at the beginning.
I suggest you start by taking some notes. Head your paper ‘ Bathroom Ideas’. Write down what you would like to achieve: more space, a modern bathroom design, a bigger shower, perhaps double basins,etc. Ask yourselves what you don’t like about your existing bathroom design, and what you want to change. You might like to add a bath, or you might like to take one away ! It is a good idea to divide a page vertically in two, and create a plus and a minus column, and add you thoughts to the appropriate list. Think about who will use the bathroom and what storage will be needed. The bathroom designs for a guest bathroom will usually require quite different storage from another used by a family.
Think about bathroom design issues as a separate subject. You may have a look you particularly like, so describe it in your plus column.Try to be specific. Instead of modern, you might describe it as ‘ square shaped bathroomware with clean minimalistic lines’ If you have seen some aspect of a bathroom design, you like, write it down, or you may have magazine or internet photos of these. It is a good idea to take a few days or even weeks, to draft your wishlist, as new ideas and thoughts on improvements you might like will come to mind.
If you have friends who have completed bathroom renovations recently, ask them what they really like about their new bathroom design, and see if it appeals to you. It might add some pluses or minuses to your ‘ Bathroom Ideas List’
Another very important step to get underway early on, is to arrange for a plumber and builder to visit your site, and simply ask them if there are any restrictions on what you can do, or where you can place items such as toilets or showers. Don’t underestimate this step, as it may come back to haunt you, if you leave it until later on.
Approaching your bathroom renovations using this method, will give you greater clarity on exactly what you want to achieve, and will start to give you a big picture to work towards. Realize that you may not be able to tick all the boxes in your plus column, and that you may have to make some compromises and trade one item off against another. Renovations are full of compromises, and you should not get stressed about this. It is a fact of life for most bathroom designs.
Having completed this process, you will be getting closer to bathroomware product selection, but not quite yet ! I recommend you pay some money and have a bathroom designer or architect look at your spaces. This will be returned tenfold in the result you achieve. They will know how much space you need for a toilet, how to space out basins on a benchtop, how your basins integrate with drawers or cupboards underneath. The list of advantages is huge. Don’t under estimate their skills, just because you may have some design flair or color sense. Spacial skills are something quite different, and experience counts.
